“Prior to making Texas Monthly (@texasmonthly ) top 10 we would open on Saturday mornings for breakfast. We did killer breakfast tacos, Micheladas, and great coffee & espresso drinks. It was a busy but manageable fun pace every Saturday. Other than the getting up early part I enjoyed the breakfast service.
The first Saturday after the Texas Monthly list was announced we opened for breakfast as usual, and just got our butts handed to us. There was a giant line out the door, the kitchen was so deep in the weeds it seemed as though there was no way out. I’m managing the espresso machine trying to make lattes, flat whites & Americanos, and make Micheladas. I’ve got coffee beans, both ground and whole everywhere. I’ve got limes and empty beer cans piling up. It’s absolutely nuts. I’m trying to ask people 3 or 4 spots back if they want coffee.
That’s when a lady asks if we have any Almond milk.
I have no filter when is comes to reactions when asked questions like that, so I rolled my eyes. The lady calls me out and says “Hey, I saw that!”. I fire back with “Really?! We are a Barbecue joint and the line is to the street, there’s no almond milk! How about a normal cup of coffee?” and she said “I’ll just have water” in a snippy tone.
That was the last Saturday we did breakfast and the last time I was allowed at the counter in front of customers.” - Michelle Holland (@florexangirl ) former customer service lead and 1/3rd of Tejas Chocolate & Barbecue (@tejaschocolate ) #bbqconfessional
